Research Interest

 

I. CURRENT AREAS OF RESEARCH INTEREST AND OF IMPLEMENTATION ACTIVITY:

The Coatings' Engineering Division makes use of its high technology and unique high vacuum equipment for the research and implementation activity related to the synthesis and deposition of modern complex coatings systems onto the surface of any solid (metalic, ceramic or polymer) substrate. These include among others:

  1. Elaboration of nanocrystalline multilayer and composite coatings with particular mechanical, electrical and optical properties;
  2. Simulation of residual stress distribution in coatings and substrates for different coatings' systems and substrates with use of FEM methods and investigation of the effect of substrate's form and/or type, of the coating's type and of its thickness as well as of the coating's edge and the experimental verification of the simulations' results;
  3. Elaboration of modern low friction, wear resistant nanocomposite coatings' systems CrC/C, TiC/C or WC/C on diffusion strengthened titanium alloys with improved resistance to wear for applications to multiple machine elements ;
  4. Elaboration of multilayer carbide coatings on HSS steels and the investigation of their tribological properties during dry friction as well as with lubrication with use of - among others - biodegradable coatings;
  5. Elaboration of quantitative methods of the coatings' durability estimation during fretting wear;
  6. Elaboration of modern testing methods of the coatings' compacity and microporosity;
  7. Elaboration of modern refractory coatings AlMoSi with diffusion barrier (TiC/TiN)xn in the environments containing simultaneously oxygen and sulphur vapours;
  8. Elaboration of modern oxidation resistant coatings based on intermetallics TiAl(X) with microalloying elements (X= Ag, Cr, Mo, Nb, Si, Ta and/or W);
  9. Elaboration of oxidation resistant Me-Cr-Al-Si coatings (where Me: Fe, Co or Ni) on constructional ferritic or austenitic steels;
  10. Elaboration of protective coatings from silicon carbide, carbonitride or nitride against electrochemical and/or gas corrosion.
  11. Elaboration of resistant to wear decorative coatings composed of transition metal carbides, carbonitrides and nitrides for HSS or sinter carbide inserts in complex mills for wood machining;
  12. Investigation of the primary structure on the mechanical characteristics of hypoeutectoid silumins for industrial applications (in particular, into automotive industry) and elaboration of the best related heat treatment.

 

II. POTENTIAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE FORTHCOMING PERIOD

Elaboration of modern functional coatings in the following domains:

  1. Elaboration of modern, low friction, wear resistant, nanocomposite CrCxNy/C, TiCxNy/C or WCxNy/C coatings on ferrous and non ferrous alloys;
  2. Elaboration of modern testing methods of the coatings' compacity and microporosity;
  3. Elaboration of modern refractory coatings AlMoSi with diffusion barrier in the environments containing simultaneously oxygen and sulphur vapours;
  4. Elaboration of modern oxidation resistant coatings based on intermetallics TiAl(X) with microalloying elements;
  5. Elaboration of oxidation resistant Me-Cr-Al-Si coatings (where Me: Fe, Co or Ni) on constructional ferritic steels;
  6. Elaboration of protective coatings from silicon carbide, carbonitride or nitride against electrochemical and/or gas corrosion.
